Cocktail Photography

Shakers SA, Cape Town

I did a shoot for Scotsman SA, they are the largest manufacturer of ice machines in the world. I received a little lesson on all the various forms of ice, cube, flake, superflake, scale, dice, and gourmet ice. They decided on a cocktail theme to show off their ice products, and chose Shaker’s bartender school in Cape Town to make it all happen.

5 Tips for capturing cocktail photography:

1.Lighting is key: Ensure you have good lighting to showcase the vibrant colors and textures of the cocktail. Natural light works best, but if shooting indoors, consider using soft, diffused lighting to avoid harsh shadows. As I didn’t have any windows to work with, therefore no natural light, I used my LED video light to add some side and backlight.

2.Composition matters: Experiment with different angles and compositions to find the most visually appealing shot. Play with the placement of props, garnishes, and glassware to create a balanced and inviting image.

3. Focus on details: Highlight the intricate details of the cocktail, such as bubbles, condensation on the glass, or the fizz of carbonated drinks. Close-up shots can add depth and intrigue to your photos. My main focus was on the ice, and trying to place it as a feature.

4. Background and setting: Choose a background that complements the cocktail and enhances its visual appeal. Consider using props like fresh fruits, herbs, or cocktail tools to add interest to the composition.

5. Experiment with styling: Don’t be afraid to get creative with styling. Play around with different garnishes, glassware, and backdrops to create a unique and eye-catching cocktail presentation. Experimenting with props and textures can elevate the overall aesthetic of your photos. I literally used all sorts of props from the bar, even taking down the mirror off the bathroom wall.

By incorporating these tips and techniques into your cocktail photography, you can capture stunning images that not only showcase the drink itself but also evoke a sense of ambiance and indulgence for your viewers to savour. Cheers to capturing the perfect shot! 🍹📸
